A struggling forward at Manchester United may have had a conversation with Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta to determine whether he would be interested in moving to the Emirates in the summer.
Marcus Rashford, who was notably left out of the England provisional squad for Euro 2024, has lost the trust of Gareth Southgate following a disappointing 2023–24 season.
After struggling under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, the 26-year-old was strongly linked to leaving Old Trafford in 2022. However, Erik ten Hag overrode his departure and saw his decision upheld.
In 56 games in all competitions last season, including 17 in the Premier League, a revitalized Rashford scored 30 goals and provided 10 assists; nonetheless, he saw another disheartening setback in 2023–2024.
Apart from his meagre 43-game total of eight goals and five assists, the Englishman also got into trouble with Ten Hag after he missed an FA Cup match against Newport County due to a sick report from a Dublin nightclub.
Rashford and Arteta are “in agreement over Arsenal move.”
After the two quickly got their differences resolved, Rashford started Saturday’s 2-1 FA Cup final victory over Manchester City. However, he was substituted in the 74th minute and did not directly assist in either of his team’s goals.
The England international did, however, sign a lengthy extension last summer, so he still has four years left on his Old Trafford contract. According to a recent source, he has expressed his intention to continue at Man United.
In contrast, a divergent report from the X account @AFCAMDEN asserts that Arteta and Rashford have discussed a potential summer transfer to Arsenal, with the Spaniard being particularly eager to have him join his team.
Although there seems to be mutual interest, a deal would depend on Man United’s willingness to work with one of their main competitors in the Premier League, which makes a trade seem doubtful.
As the French champions prepare to live without Kylian Mbappe, Paris Saint-Germain was once mentioned as a potential destination for the attacker. However, Les Parisiens have now focused on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia of Napoli.
Does Rashford have a place at Arsenal?
Even though there have been some unavoidable transfer disasters along the road, most Gooners have come to accept that Arteta made the right decision in the transfer market and have no intention of regretting it come football season.
There is no reason why Arteta cannot extract the greatest performance out of Rashford either, since Kai Havertz was the Spaniard’s most recent successful resurrection project, even though it took a few months to enjoy the rewards of his unrelenting dedication to the German.
However, with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard already vying for playing time off the left, where his best position is undoubtedly off the field, a player of his caliber is perhaps the last thing the Gunners need right now.
Arsenal is in dire need of a new center striker. Even if Rashford has occasionally been Ten Hag’s attacking focal point, any Man United fan will be happy to share his struggles as a number nine.
Furthermore, from an outside perspective, it does not make a whole lot of sense to pursue a deal for Rashford, who would cost a pretty penny indeed and could use up a large chunk of the window if Man United plays hardball. Edu is also shopping for a new goalkeeper, central midfielder, and right winger this summer.
