Raphael Varane’s £500,000 per game cost has once again exposed Manchester United’s questionable transfer history.
The £41 million center back, plagued by injuries, has announced that he is departing this summer after the Red Devils refused to give him a contract extension.
Varane has played 93 games for United since signing from Real Madrid in August 2021, however he has missed 41.
That’s extremely dubious value, especially considering that the Frenchman is one of Old Trafford’s top earners, taking home about £350,000 a week.
It’s also a glaring illustration of why Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Red Devils’ minority owner, wants a new transfer policy that takes effect at the end of the current campaign.
Ratcliffe will insist on long-term planning and better value for the money.
Dan Ashworth, the new sporting director, will play a significant role in that change, according to sources The future of boss Erik ten Hag is still unknown.
Tosin Adarabioyo of Fulham has come to light as an unexpected contender to succeed Varane.
Uncapped at six feet five inches, the 26-year-old Englishman was aided by United’s new technical director Jason Wilcox while he was in the junior system at Manchester City.
According to TalkSPORT, the Red Devils are eager to stymie Newcastle’s pursuit of Adarabioyo.
Varane, meanwhile, says Old Trafford will always hold a special place in his heart.
“To you guys, Manchester United supporters, it’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wear that shirt,” he said in a video.
“As a Man United player, my first visit to Old Trafford was incredible; the atmosphere was incredible.
“I fell in love—both with the team and the supporters. Playing for Manchester United is a must to really appreciate what that means.
This place is home to my children. It will always hold a particular place in my heart.”
